Increasing Risks for Paxil Users

People need to watch out for the side effects of the medicine that they are taking. Side effects of antidepressants can vary with each person. Paxil is one of the leading antidepressants in the market but severe side effects also come along with it. In every drug or medicine, there is a pregnancy risk category and Paxil went from C to D. An increase risk for heart attack is seen when antipsychotics and antidepressants are taken together, as shown in the results of a study conducted due to most patients taking antipsychotics also needs antidepressants.

Vulnerability to suicide is one of the major problems in taking Paxil as an antidepressant. People ages 24 and below have a high risk of having suicidal thoughts when they are taking Paxil. It is imperative that those taking Paxil should be monitored closely to watch out for signs of suicide like unusual behavior or worsening of their depression. Proper notification of a physician when there is a change of behavior seen in the person taking Paxil can prevent slip-ups.

Side effects that are less serious are often tolerable to some people. They may experience drossiness, insomnia, nervousness and dizziness. Some also complained about dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea and constipation with minimal weight changes. A change in their sex drive can also be noted with impotence. Paxil users also have common side effect of ringing in the ears.

Some of the reported severe side effects by Paxil users are as follows, those are the ones that needs to be referred to a doctor. Things to watch out for are headache, memory problems, confusions, seizures, weakness, fainting spells and easy bruising or bleeding. Those that may be allergic to Paxil could experience swelling of the face that could impede swallowing and breathing and also generalized fever. Some may have tremors, rigid muscles, overactive reflexes, irregular and fast heartbeat and sweating.

Some women taking Paxil while they are pregnant can have babies with birth defects although discontinuing the medication may have them in relapse. Plans of getting pregnant while under Paxil should be aired to the attending physician. The manufacturer of Paxil is now getting cases form women that have children with Paxil birth defects.

Wider Public Knowledge on Paxil Side Effects Sought

Looking at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautions, results of clinical testing, recommendations of researches and complaints from users, public knowledge should have intensified to help avoid unfortunate incidents.  Alleged victims ofantidepressants from British Columbia aim to increase awareness about infantexposure to antidepressants.

As reported by patients, Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride) side effects manifest themselves upon taking it just like any other medicine. It is prescribed for the treatment of major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorder. Paxil is one of the most doctor-prescribed antidepressant drugs today, according to the FDA.

There are minor ones and in some extreme cases, life-threatening side effects occur such as birth defects to newborn babies whose mothers took the antidepressant while pregnant.

As conducted research studies and gathered patient reports, Paxil has been labeled to have severe dangerous side effects and withdrawal symptoms.  Drowsiness, weakness, constipation and diarrhea are reported to be Paxil side effects that are most commonly experienced. Other side effects include agitation, impulsiveness, nervousness, nausea, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory delay. Some of these side effects are generally minor and thus medical attention is rarely needed.

However, Paxil has also very critical side effects wherein immediate medical attention should be considered. Paxil users should consult their doctors if they encounter side effects like breathing and eating difficulties, fainting, memory problems, tremors, allergic reaction, seizures, balance or coordination problems, abnormal heart rate, confusions, hallucinations, personality changes and suicidal thoughts.

Consequently, immediate report to the doctor is required for those who have doubts and queries about their health condition in connection with Paxil intake. Paxil manufacturer, GlaxoSmithSkine (GSK), actually faces a number of Paxil Lawsuit. The lawsuits alleged that the company was fully-aware of the harmful side effects of Paxil but they still produced and distributed the drug. Therefore, those who experienced serious side effects should also seek legal advice to determine if they are eligible for monetary compensation from the Paxil manufacturer.

More Information on Brain Zaps

The brain of a human being is a complicated and often misunderstood part of the body.It has taken doctors and other medical professionals’ centuries to know what they do now about the brain and still they’ve barely scratched the surface on it. While there are studies currently going on about how resistant the brain is to drugs like antidepressants, neuroscience is still a relatively new form of science.

One common side effect of drugs which affect the brain is so called “brain zaps.” There are several symptoms of brain zaps which many describe as brief but repeated electric shock-like sensations in the brain and head, or originating in the brain but extending to other parts of the body. The experience does often vary from person to person. There are many who claim that they feel wave-like electrical pulse that quickly travels across the surface of (or through) the brain. While other people also claim that they experience these "waves" through the rest of their body, but the sensation dissipates quickly. These waves are also sometimes accompanied by brief tinnitus (ear ringing) and vertigo like feelings. Once the initial shock is over, light-headedness is felt that may last for a while.

What is the root cause of brain zaps? There have been studies which have shown that brain zaps are most commonly experienced by those who are trying to stop taking antidepressants, especially those in the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) group. Many of these antidepressant medications work by holding serotonin, which is a chemical that is both a hormone and a neurotransmitter that is required to have communication between nerve cells, for longer periods in the synaptic spaces of the nervous system. The space that is created between the nerve cells is where it is believed that an electrical current may become present. Since Serotonin transmits currents, it is highly possible that holding the Serotonin longer than nature intended could cause a misfiring of electrical current resulting in a Brain Zap.

Many who have experienced brain zaps have described the experiences as ranging from mildly irritating to completely disabling, however, there is still a lot to learn about them. Brain zaps have also been known to be a side effect of antidepressants similar to Paxil birth defects. Consult your doctor a soon as possible if you are experiencing brain zaps.

Paxil and Diarrhea

Paxil is an FDA-approved selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant used to treat adults with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic order, anxiety disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder.  It has been proven to have successfully managed the conditions.   But there have been reports of users having side effects.   Side effects were either minor or major, depending on the severity. Paxil side effects seem to be more focused on the digestive system such as diarrhea or constipation, nausea, dry mouth and cramping.  Several users of the drug claims to have experienced diarrhea that lasted for a few days.

Diarrhea is the frequent passage of loose, watery stools.   The symptoms define the category of diarrhea: complicated or uncomplicated.   Uncomplicated diarrhea has symptoms like thin or loose stools, abdominal cramping, watery stools, sense of urgency, and nausea and vomiting.  Complicated diarrhea, on the other hand, has the same symptoms but accompanied with fever, presence of blood, mucus or undigested food on the stool and weight loss.  Persistent occurrence of these symptoms should be consulted with a health care provider.

Majority of the cases of diarrhea will disappear within a week or so.  But before it does, there are possible ways to help ease the symptoms.  Patients experiencing diarrhea accompanied with vomiting should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.  Special dehydration drinks are also available to restore electrolyte balance caused by diarrhea.   Doctors also suggest eating bananas, rice, apple and toast (BRAT), otherwise known as the diarrhea diet..  For decades, this has been followed by patients having diarrhea.   Patients are also discouraged to drink fluids within meal for this can cause vomiting.

Generally, diarrhea fades away on its own.  Diarrhea brought about by Paxil is common during the first few days of intake.   Paxil should be given ample time to get rid of its side effects.  However, if you find the symptoms troublesome, you can contact your health care provider and deal with the situation.  If you have experienced this symptom and would like to put some legal action into it, you can actually consult a Paxil lawyer.
